“We love because he first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19
There is a phrase I come back to again and again:
Grateful for His grace. Gracious with His love.
It has become more than a tagline for Living Life Graciously. It is a reminder of the way I want to live.
But what does it actually mean to live life graciously?
For a long time, I think I would have associated gracious living with being kind, patient, thankful, and perhaps handling life’s circumstances with a little more grace.
And those things are certainly part of it.
But the more life I live and the more I walk with Jesus, the more I realize that gracious living begins somewhere much deeper.
It begins with recognizing His grace toward us.
Grace Doesn’t Require a Perfect Life
It is easy to be grateful when life is going the way we hoped.
When our prayers are answered the way we wanted.
When the people we love are doing well.
When relationships are easy.
When the future feels certain.
But life doesn’t always look like that, does it?
There are seasons of joy, but there are also seasons of loss. There are answered prayers and prayers we are still waiting on. There are beautiful beginnings and painful endings. There are days when gratitude comes naturally and days when we have to intentionally search for something to be thankful for.
Living graciously doesn’t mean pretending those difficult things aren’t difficult.
It means learning to recognize that God’s grace is still present in the middle of them.
Sometimes His grace looks like an answered prayer.
Sometimes it looks like strength for one more day.
Sometimes it is a friend who calls at exactly the right moment.
Sometimes it is a Scripture we have read dozens of times suddenly speaking directly to our heart.
And sometimes grace is simply the quiet assurance that even when we don’t understand what God is doing, He has not left us.
Gratitude Changes Our Perspective
Gratitude doesn’t necessarily change our circumstances.
But it can change the way we see them.
When we intentionally look for God’s goodness, we begin noticing things we might otherwise overlook—the ordinary blessings woven throughout our days.
A morning cup of coffee.
A conversation with someone we love.
A beautiful sunset.
Laughter around the dinner table.
A quiet moment with our Bible open in front of us.
Another day we’ve been given.
The more we notice His goodness, the more we begin to understand just how much grace surrounds us.
Not because every day is good.
But because God is good in every day.
Gracious Living Doesn’t Stop With Gratitude
There is another part of gracious living that I believe is just as important.
Once we recognize the grace God has given us, we are called to extend grace to others.
First John 4:19 says:
“We love because he first loved us.”
We don’t manufacture that love on our own.
We love because we have first been loved by Him.
And I believe grace works much the same way.
Because we have received grace, we can give grace.
Because we have been forgiven, we can forgive.
Because God has been patient with us, we can be patient with others.
Because He has loved us when we were undeserving, we can choose to love people even when loving them isn’t easy.
That doesn’t mean we never need boundaries. It doesn’t mean we ignore hurt or pretend wrong things are right.
It simply means that we remember how much grace we ourselves have received.
And that realization should change the way we walk through this world.
What Does Living Graciously Look Like?
Sometimes living graciously looks very ordinary.
It is choosing kindness when irritation would be easier.
It is listening instead of immediately responding.
It is forgiving when holding onto resentment feels justified.
It is encouraging someone who is struggling.
It is being generous with our words.
It is thanking God for today’s blessings instead of constantly waiting for tomorrow’s.
It is remembering that the person standing in front of us may be carrying something we know nothing about.
And sometimes it is simply asking:
“Lord, how can I reflect Your love in this moment?”
Those small choices matter.
A gracious life isn’t built in one grand moment.
It is built through thousands of ordinary moments when we choose gratitude, kindness, faith, forgiveness, generosity, and love.
The Heart Behind Living Life Graciously
Living Life Graciously was never meant to simply be a name.
It carries a story very close to my heart, and over time it has grown into something I hope will encourage others to slow down, recognize God’s goodness, spend time in His Word, and live with greater intention.
Whether it’s through Bible study, journaling, gratitude, something meaningful created for your home, or a gift that reminds someone of God’s Word, my hope is always the same:
That it points us back to Him.
Because ultimately, living life graciously isn’t about creating a beautiful life.
It is about recognizing the beautiful grace of God within the life we’ve already been given.
A Little Challenge for This Week
Take a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:
Where have I seen God’s grace in my life lately?
Maybe write down three things.
They don’t have to be big.
Then ask one more question:
How can I extend that same grace to someone else this week?
Maybe someone needs encouragement.
Maybe someone needs forgiveness.
Maybe someone simply needs your time.
Maybe God will place someone on your heart as soon as you ask.
Whatever it is, don’t underestimate what God can do through one small act of grace.
Because gracious living begins with remembering this simple truth:
We have been deeply loved.
We have been abundantly forgiven.
We have been given immeasurable grace.
So may we live grateful for His grace—and gracious with His love.
Grateful for His grace. Gracious with His love.
